CASE 3: Jennie was recently hired to work as a receptionist for the front lobby. As receptionist, she is responsible for making copies for the associates. Her son, Bruce, comes in and needs some copies for a school project. He brought his own paper and needs 300 copies for his class. If he doesn’t bring the copies with him, he will fail the project. The company copier does not require a security key nor do they keep track of copies made by departments.
- Ethics concern an individual’s moral judgments about right and wrong. Decisions taken within an organisation may be made by individuals or groups, but whoever makes them will be influenced by the culture of the company. The decision to behave ethically is a moral one; employees must decide what they think is the right course of action. This may involve rejecting the route that would lead to the biggest short-term profit.
If you were assigned to do a task, then you must be responsible of it.
If I am on Jennie's situation, as a mother, I would do what anything for my child. But, in this case, using a Company's Property is an issue. At this point, you are stealing from the company. Maybe if it were a couple of pages, then it's okay. But 300 copies are too much. The use of ink, which is from the company, is too much. Make first a decision if what you will do is wrong or right. The right thing to do is to go ask my boss first if it is okay to use the copier. If he says no, then, find another way, everything has a way. She could have sent her son to a office depot where he can do his project. Don't just depend on one thing. You must think of alternative ways. When working for a company with strong business ethics, employees are comfortable in the knowledge that they are not by their own action allowing unethical practices to continue.
